Kalends

Kalends converts standard modern Gregorian dates into Roman-style dates using kalends, nones, ides of March, etc. The theory is based on the explanation and full calendar by Paul Lewis. Steven Gibb's Roman numeral and date conversion with Roman calculator & Roman numerals test is a more learned converter of Roman dates and numbers, the latter of which can also be converted on my own Roman numeral converter.

Form of dates

The dates given are the abbreviated forms which give the days to the nones (NON.: the 5th of 7th of the present month) ides (ID.: the 13th or 15th of the present month), or kalends (KAL.: the 1st of the next month). A.D. simply means "days to go, counting inclusively" and PRID. means "day before": so, A.D. III ID. MART. MCML means three days to go to the ides of March (which fall on 15th in March) 1950, i.e. 13 March 1950. Leap years are catered for: an extra day is inserted after 24 February and marked as A.D. BIS VI KAL. MART, or the 2nd of the 6th days to go to the kalends of March. Years are simply Western anno domini dates converted into Roman numerals. Days of the week have been omitted as the Roman week was 10 days long. An example month, for April 2004, is given below. See Paul Lewis for a fuller explanation.

The Programme

Kalends is a Perl CGI programme. It was initially developed because I wanted to write a Blosxom plugin so that entries on my weblog, Aurlog, would be dated in the Roman calendar.
